WHO, WHEN & WHERE

Black life in the valley

Roanoke's Harrison Museum of African American Culture will hold a forum Friday at 7 p.m. to discuss the findings of its oral history project, "A Hidden History: The Black Experience in the Roanoke Valley."

The project, which included 60 interviews with black Roanoke Valley residents, seeks to illuminate the history and heritage of the Roanoke Valley's black population. At the forum, project participants will present their findings of 20th-century black life in the Valley. A question-and-answer session will follow.

The information gathered from the oral histories will be documented for research use, and will be used to develop a local African-American history exhibit.

The museum is at 523 Harrison Ave. N.W., Roanoke. For more information, call 345-4818.

Lunchtime Express

Roanoke's Virginia Museum of Transportation will offer its Lunchtime Express to 4- and 5-year-olds from 12:15-1:30 p.m. on Fridays, beginning today and lasting through May 28.

The Lunchtime Express will focus on a different transportation topic each week, with kids participating on creative projects. Kids also eat from their bagged lunches while sitting in many of the trains, cars, trucks and buses on exhibit at the museum.

The six-week session costs $30.

For more information, call 342-5670.

Stories on adoption

A collection of individual stories on single male adoptive parents and problems they encounter is being compiled by Robert J. Renehan of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

Renehan adopted two boys in the early '70s. His reaction to "Diff'rent Strokes" and what he calls the "utter unreality" of similar TV sitcoms prompted him to research single male adoptive parents.

Individuals who wish to contribute to Renehan's collection, may write to him at P.O. Box 1230, Harpers Ferry, W.Va., 25425, or call (304) 535-2507.

Meet Vera Dickerson

The Art Museum of Western Virginia in downtown Roanoke's Center in the Square continues its "Meet the Artist" series today at 10 a.m. with a lecture by Vera Dickerson.

Dickerson, a Roanoke artist, will review and demonstrate methods used in watercolor and techniques for painting on rice paper.

The program will be held in the museum's second floor lecture hall. Call 342-5760.
