OBIT JARRETT, VIRGINIA QUARLES

JARRETT, Virginia Quarles, 92, of Richmond, Va., died Tuesday, April 20, 1993 at Montgomery Regional Hospital, Blacksburg, Va. Mrs. Jarrett was a native of Richmond, Va., born on August 10, 1900 to the late Alvin Gordon and Olivia May Phillips Quarles. She was past president of the United Methodist Women, Sunday School Superintendent, Director of the youth group, past president of Virginia Methodist Ministers Wives, District officer of the Women's Society of Christian Services and a life member of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Women's Christian Temperence Union (WCTU) serving as National Vice President for 25 years, Virginia State President for 25 years, President Worldwide for 9 years and Honorary President and Director of Legislation and Parliamentarian. She was on the Board of Trustees of the International Reform Federation, and was past president of the P.T.A. in Richmond and Portsmouth. She was honored in Who's Who of American Women in 1957, Virginia Mother of the year in 1961 and received the Governor's Citation as Lady of Virginia. bhe was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Thomas Roy Jarrett; a son, Dr. Alvin Quarles Jarrett; a grandson, Scott Jarrett Burger and also five brothers. Surviving are two sons, Dr. T. Roy Jarrett Jr., Virginia Beach, Dr. Harry W. Jarrett, Lynchburg; two daughters, Mrs. W. Aubrey Shaw Jr., Newport, Mrs. Wilbur F. Burger, Lynchburg; also one sister, Mrs. Luther J. Derby, Richmond; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Parham Road Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Road, Richmond, Va. from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, April 24, at Reveille United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Westhampton Memorial Park. There will be a gathering of family and friends at Reveille United Methodist Church social hall after the funeral service. Local arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg, Va.
