CHEATING ON THE ENVIRONMENT

I READ recently about the newest so-called advancement in ecological technology in this newspaper. When, for example, Company A and Company B have to reduce their emissions by 150 tons. If it costs more for Company B to make this reduction, then Company A can reduce emissions by 100 tons and sell the extra ones to Company B. It seems to me that the policy of selling the right to pollute is a scary way for a company to make a profit.

They should have to meet the standards, no matter how much it costs. We can't let companies cut corners and control our standards. They should sell their products, not a way to cheat the pollution cuts. If we don't make companies reduce pollution, then all of us will be paying a higher price. REBECCA HOGAN ROANOKE
