STATE ATTORNEY'S STAFF MEETS WITH VRS TRUSTEES

The state attorney general's staff and trustees of the Virginia Retirement System met Thursday to discuss a federal investigation of the pension fund, a newspaper reported.

The meeting came after the U.S. attorney's office began an investigation into real estate and legal transactions by the VRS, the Richmond Times-Dispatch said in a story for today's edition.

"The U.S. attorney's office is looking into issues that are uniquely federal in nature and transcend my authority," Attorney General Stephen Rosenthal said.

The trustees met for a half-hour with Claire Guthrie, chief deputy attorney general. She later declined comment.

Guthrie had been directed to "provide legal advice to VRS regarding the reported federal inquiry," a statement by Rosenthal said.

Federal investigators reportedly were concerned about the governance of the retirement system, stock transactions, bookkeeping and the VRS' relationship with its real-estate arm RF&P Corp., a former railroad acquired in 1991 for nearly $548 million.
