OBIT-SWOPE, BURBRIDGE CUTHBERT, ("BURB")
SWOPE, Burbridge Cuthbert, ("Burb"), 71, of Narrows, died Monday evening,
April 19, 1993, in Fort Myers, Fla. He was born in West Virginia on April 26,
1921, and was the son of the late Joseph Buell and Elsie Harvey Swope. He was
preceded in death by his first wife, Mary C. Swope. He was a graduate of
Concord College at Athens, W.Va., and was a retired senior engineer for the
Hoechst/Celanese Fibers Company Plant at Narrows after 42 years of service to
the company. He was past commander and a member of the American Legion Post
#68 of Narrows and also had served as state vice commander of the American
Legion in Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Lyn Howe Swope of Narrows;
three sons and daughters-in-law, Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Michael and Luci
Swope of Charlotte, N.C., Jonathan C. and Susan Swope of Christiansburg, Allen
R. and Lisa Swope of Dublin; six grandchildren, Michael Andrew Swope, Joseph
Matthew Swope, James C. McIlwain, III, Jonathan Patrick Swope, Christopher
Allen Swope, Mary Ashley Swope; two brothers, Joseph B. Swope, Kimberly, W.Va.
and Thelbert A. Swope, McConnell, S.C.; a sister, Janis S. Toler, Mullens,
W.Va. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Riffe's Funeral
Chapel in Narrows, with Dr. G. Carl Green of Winston-Salem, N.C., officiating.
Entombment will follow in Birchlawn Abbey, Pearisburg, Va., with graveside
rites conducted by the Giles County American Legion Post and the Veterans of
Foreign War. The family will meet their friends at Riffe's in Narrows Friday
from 7 to 9 p.m. The family suggests that those who are sending memorials
