The unbeaten Terriers were led by Shannon Gray, who bashed out four hits in five trips to drive in two runs while Gary Wiggins and Chuck Spraker homered. Byrd (9-0 overall, 3-0 Blue Ridge) got strong pitching from Chris Carr (4-0), who allowed six hits and struck out nine.
In other baseball:
Kameron Crowder hit a bases-loaded double and drove in three runs in the first inning to lead Alleghany past Lord Botetourt 16-4 in a Blue Ridge District game at Covington.
In Salem, Northside thrashed Salem 11-3 in a Blue Ridge District game behind Kelly Dampeer's homer.
At Cave Spring, the Knights outslugged Patrick Henry 18-9 in a Roanoke Valley District game. Cave Spring (6-2, 4-0) was led by Kevin Davis, who had a pair of doubles and drove in four runs. The Patriots (1-4, 0-3) were led by Mike McMahon's three hits and two RBI.
At Pulaski, William Fleming (3-5, 2-3) ripped Pulaski County 11-1 in a Roanoke Valley District game. Travis McLaughlin (2-1) got the victory as he allowed only three hits while striking out 10. Jason Morris was 3-for-4 with one RBI and three stolen bases; Eddie Jones had four hits in five trips to drive in three runs; and Mike Souma drove in four runs with three hits.
At New Castle, Keith Bryant hit two home runs as James River rolled past Craig County 15-7 in a Pioneer District game. Johnny Crawford homered for Craig County (1-4, 1-3).
In a Virginia Independent Conference game at Walrond Park, Lynchburg Christian (9-0, 8-0) battered Roanoke Valley Christian (3-3, 3-3) 11-3. RVC led 2-1 in the fourth after Scott Apjok's homer. Four walks and two errors in the fifth led to a seven-run inning by Lynchburg Christian.
\ GOLF: Medalist Benji Kitts shot 41 to lead Roanoke Valley Christian to a 173-211 golf victory over Roanoke Catholic at Countryside.
\ SOCCER: At River's Edge, Fishburne Military edged Roanoke Catholic 3-2 in a Virginia Independent Conference game. Fishburne (3-3, 2-2) won on a penalty kick by Mark Warner with five minutes left. Catholic (3-2, 1-1) had goals from Jeff Deyerle and Danny Rowland.
John Logan scored a goal to help North Cross (6-1-1) to a 2-0 victory over Heritage (2-3) in Lynchburg.
Cave Spring goalkeeper Justin Brittle made seven saves as the host Knights (3-2, 2-1) shut out Franklin County (1-1-1 in the district) 1-0 in a Roanoke Valley District game. Bobby Warnick hit a penalty kick to win.
At Daleville, Lord Botetourt (7-2) defeated James River 5-1 in a non-district match as Scott Kirby scored twice.
\ GIRLS' SOCCER: At Martinsville, North Cross lost 3-1 to Martinsville despite a goal by Amanda Eubank and 26 saves by keeper Brandy Markell.
\ SOFTBALL: At Daleville, Mandy Sowers pitched a five-inning no-hitter as Lord Botetourt (5-1, 2-0) thumped Alleghany (2-5, 2-1) 16-0 in a Blue Ridge District game.
In Lexington, William Byrd scored nine runs in the first on the way to a 24-0 rout of Rockbridge County in a Blue Ridge District game.
In a Roanoke Valley District game at Breckenridge Junior High, Cave Spring walloped William Fleming 24-2 as winning pitcher Rene Kopstein led the offense with a grand slam.
At Roanoke Valley Christian, Stephanie Webb had a triple, three doubles and five RBI as the Eagles beat Catholic 20-1 and 6-1 in a Blue Ridge Conference doubleheader.
On Thursday, Roanoke Catholic's Wendy Murdock went 3-for-3 and as the Celtics won the nightcap 10-2 to earn a split of a doubleheader with Hargrave Military. Hargrave won the opener 7-6.
\ TRACK: At Cave Spring, William Fleming relay teams won the 3,200-, 400- and 1,600-meter races as the Colonels won 75-57 in a Roanoke Valley District boys' meet. Cave Spring twins Tiki and Ronde Barber led the individual events. Tiki won the long jump, triple jump and 200-meter dash. Ronde won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles. Emily Rakes won two events as the Cave Spring girls defeated William Fleming 67-65. Rakes ran the 110-meter hurdles in 17.9 seconds and cleared 5 feet 2 inches in the high jump.
