Jones, an assistant to Hokies coach Frank Beamer for 12 years, was released last December following Tech's 2-8-1 season. At Group AAA Potomac, he replaces Tom Secules, father of former Virginia quarterback Scott Secules.
"They wanted me and made me feel that was the thing for me to do," Jones said. "Nobody's been banging my door down college-wise, because there's not a whole lot out there. This is a head coaching job, and it was a challenge."
Jones accepted the job last Friday.
Jones spent six years at Tech coaching defensive backs, and before that spent six years under Beamer at Murray State. He wouldn't characterize his move to high school football as long-term.
"I think it's a good move right now. I'm not going to sit here and say this is what I was looking to do," he said. "Right now, it's going to be a wait-and-see thing, see how it goes. It's been 15 years since I coached in high school."
