CORNERBACK JEFFRIES 4TH CAV IN FIRST 6 ROUNDS

Virginia cornerback Greg Jeffries was drafted Monday by the Detroit Lions, marking the first time that four UVa players have been drafted in the first six rounds.

Jeffries, admittedly upset when he was not selected in the first four rounds Sunday, was the sixth pick in the sixth round and the 147th overall.

"The thing that disappointed me was that I played better than - and had better athletic ability than - a few guys who went in front of me," Jeffries said. "I'm talking about a few guys I played with at the Senior Bowl."

Three UVa players were drafted Sunday. Defensive end Chris Slade went to New England in the second round, tailback Terry Kirby to Miami in the third round and offensive tackle David Ware to the New York Jets in the fourth round.

When he worked out for scouts at the National Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Jeffries had a vertical leap of 38 inches and was timed between 4.38 and 4.42 seconds for 40 yards.

"Those were some of the best times out there," said Jeffries, who said his height (5 feet 8) might have been a factor. "I was the shortest defensive back there."

Outside of the four UVa players, the only selection from a state college was Hampton wide receiver Terrance Warren, drafted by Seattle in the fifth round.
