BYRD BASHES PH IN BASEBALL

Unbeaten William Byrd continued to dominate Roanoke high school baseball Wednesday.

The Terriers (11-0) reached into the Group AAA ranks to smash Patrick Henry 9-2 in a non-district game at Maher Field. Chris Jones (2-0) pitched the victory, Rich Ellis went 3-for-4 and Chris Carr hit a two-run homer.

In other baseball:

At Salem, Tracy Butt had five of Salem's 10 stolen bases and the Spartans edged Blacksburg 9-8. Butt went 2-for-3 and scored three runs. Tommy Lee scattered seven hits and went 2-for-4.

At Buchanan, Jack Johnson had three hits, including a double and two-run homer, as Lord Botetourt belted James River 7-1. Chad Shelton pitched a five-hitter and struck out 11.

\ SOFTBALL: At Penn Forest, Cave Spring (7-2, 3-0) outslugged Patrick Henry 17-12 in a Roanoke Valley District game. Sallie Cadwell had a double, a triple and two RBI in three trips to the plate, and Renee Kopstein had four RBI.

\ BOYS' TENNIS: Glenvar (5-2) defeated William Byrd 6-3, and Aaron Johnson won his seventh match and Wes Jones won his fifth match to remain unbeaten.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At River's Edge Sports Complex, E.C. Glass (5-1-1) got a goal in each of the two five-minute overtime periods and defeated host Patrick Henry 2-0 in boys' soccer. PH is 2-2-3.

On Tuesday at River's Edge, William Fleming tied Patrick Henry 3-3 as the Colonels avoided losing to the Patriots for the first time ever. Kelly Graham scored twice for Fleming, and his brother, Kevin, had the other goal.

Tuesday at Dublin, Martin Szumanski and Keith Cox each scored in the first half in leading Cave Spring to a 2-1 victory over host Pulaski County.

\ BOYS' TRACK: At Buchanan, Michael McCaleb won the high jump and the 110-meter hurdles to lead James River to a win in a Pioneer District meet. The Knights had 93 points, followed by Parry McCluer (66), Bath County (42) and Craig County (25).

Salem (106) defeated Lord Botetourt (40) and Roanoke Catholic (9) in a meet at Daleville. Mike Murphy was a winner in the triple jump and 100- and 200-meter dashes for the Spartans.

Alleghany beat William Byrd 70-57 as Michael Hunter won the 110-meter hurdles and the triple jump and was on the winning 400-meter relay team. Byrd's Jamie Edwards won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter races.

\ GIRLS' TRACK: At William Byrd, Alleghany racked up 84 points to 43 for the Terriers. Melanie Fischer was first in the 200- and 100-meter dashes to lead the Mountaineers. Byrd's Christine Grecus won the long and high jumps.

At Buchanan, Tiffany Wagner of Bath County won the long jump, the triple jump and the high jump in leading the Chargers to 111.5 points and a Pioneer District victory. James River was second with 44.5 points, followed by Craig County (32) and Parry McCluer (19). Angie Johnson of James River won the 200 and 100 dashes.
