President Clinton said Wednesday he will name Arthur Levitt Jr., a publisher and former chairman of the American Stock Exchange, chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Levitt, 62, would succeed Richard Breeden, a Republican appointee who is stepping down a few months before his term ends. He is owner of the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call and chairman of the New York City Economic Development Corp. - Associated Press
\ Hess's checks may be tricky to cash
RICHMOND - Just before Hess's Department Stores Inc. closed its two Richmond area stores, the retailer told employees their payroll checks might bounce.
Company officials said this week they didn't know whether any checks have bounced.
Hess's closed its stores at Chesterfield Town Center and Virginia Center Commons on Sunday after holding liquidation sales over the past two months. The chain has closed or is closing its Virginia stores. Its store at New River Valley Mall in Christiansburg is expected to close soon. - Associated Press
