BATON TWIRLERS CHOSEN TO JOIN EUROPEAN TOUR

Two Roanoke-area students have been chosen to participate in the 1993 Spirit of America National Honor Band Performing Tour of Europe this summer.

Marie Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Barry Smith of Vinton, and Christina Sluder, daughter of Catherine Sluder of Roanoke, were chosen by videotaped audition for the tour.

The students will leave June 22 for five days of rehearsals, then will fly to Europe, where they will perform in Luxembourg, France, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.

Smith, a student at Staunton River High School, is a member of Pizzazz - The Star City Twirlers. Sluder is a member of the "Pride of Northside" marching band at Northside High School and the Senior Drill Team of the Southernettes Baton Corps.

Those selected for the tour seek sponsors to help them with their expenses.
