BOY, 14, CHARGED IN DOG'S SHOOTING

A 14-year-old Roanoke boy faces criminal charges in the shooting of Buddy the junkyard dog.

The mixed shepherd was shot with a pistol this month as he guarded the fences around Fritz Wreckers on Orange Avenue Northeast.

The teen-ager, whose name was not released because of his age, faces charges of discharging a firearm in a public place and shooting a companion animal.

The shot went through Buddy's left shoulder and crashed into a rib before it could hit a vital organ of the cheeseburger-loving dog.

Thursday, Buddy took his final dose of antibiotics to combat the effects of the gunshot wound.

Clay Fitzgerald, who owns Fritz Wreckers, said Buddy is a changed dog.

"He's got a bit of an attitude now," he said. "Especially, if he sees a teen-ager in a baseball cap. He's got a different sound to his bark. He was a pretty mellow ol' boy before this."

Fitzgerald said Buddy now is reluctant to patrol the fences, a job he once relished.

"He acts like he doesn't want to go out there," Fitzgerald said.
