RUSH SEEKS GOP NOD FOR HOUSE RACE

Larry Nicholas "Nick" Rush, 25, a member of the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors, will formally announce today that he is a candidate for the Republican nomination for the 12th District seat in the Virginia House of Delegates.

Rush, of Christiansburg, will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. on the third floor of the county courthouse.

The House seat is open this fall. Del. Joan Munford, D-Blacksburg, announced earlier this year that she will not seek re-election. The district encompasses eastern Giles County and northern Montgomery County.

In 1991, Rush was only 23 and had no previous political experience when he upset incumbent Supervisor Ann Hess for the District B seat on the Board of Supervisors.

He had campaigned as a working man - one who knew first-hand the impact of recent economic hardships on the valley's working class.

Rush is a former Army paratrooper and drives a Federal Express truck for a living. He is married to the former Amy Shaffer and they have two sons.

Pat Cupp, a Blacksburg Realtor, is the only other GOP candidate still considering a run for the 12th District seat. Cupp said he should make his final decision sometime today.

Republicans will pick their candidate for the seat May 15 at a mass meeting at Blacksburg High School.

Jim Shuler, a Blacksburg veterinarian, is the only candidate still seeking the Democratic nomination for the 12th District race. Munford has endorsed Shuler.
