ROANOKE ANNOUNCES 3 SIGNEES

Derek Bryant from Franklin County was one of three basketball recruits announced Tuesday by Roanoke College, which also landed the leading scorer in the state.

Bryant, the senior class president at Franklin County, made 47 3-pointers this past season and scored 12.6 points per game.

Jason Bishop, a 6-foot-1 guard, was named first-team All-Group A after averaging 34.6 points for Rye Cove High School in Clinchport. Bishop, whose average was tops for all classifications, scored more than 50 points in three games and had a high of 56.

The Maroons also added 6-5 Tim Braun from Turner Ashby in Bridgewater, where he averaged 14.9 points and 9.3 rebounds. Braun, a two-time All-Valley District choice, was the first Turner Ashby player in 19 years to be selected first-team All-Region II.

The recruits join a Roanoke team that welcomes back four starters from last year's roster, which finished 20-6.

The women's lacrosse program at Washington and Lee has received a bid to the Division III NCAA Tournament and will meet two-time defending champion Trenton State at 3 p.m. Saturday in Trenton, N.J. Top-ranked Trenton State (12-0) has won 39 games in a row and has not lost a home game in more than four years. Trenton State has won five Division III championships, the first in 1986, before W&L (14-2) had a women's lacrosse program.

W&L was ranked 14th in the most recent Division III women's poll, but five of the teams ahead of the Generals are in conferences that do not participate in postseason play.

Top-ranked Virginia begins the six-team NCAA Division I women's lacrosse tournament with a bye. The Cavaliers play Saturday's winner between Dartmouth (11-3) and Harvard (12-2) on May 15 in the semifinals at Maryland.

VMI basketball coach Joe Cantafio confirmed he has received a letter-of-intent from All-Timesland and All-Group AA guard Maurice Spencer from Martinsville High School.

Virginia Tech's Marcus Kramer has received a bid to the NCAA Tennis Championships, becoming the second player in Tech history to participate in the event. Jim Milley was Tech's last player to make the tournament in 1978. The tournament begins May 19 in Athens, Ga.

Kramer, ranked 50th in the nation, finished 28-9 this year and is one of four players from Region II to get an automatic bid to the 64-player field. Thirty-two players receive bids from the eight regions nationwide; 32 others are chosen at-large to fill the bracket.

Virginia's women's tennis team, ranked 22nd nationally, has been selected to compete in the NCAA Division I Women's Championships May 12-16 at the University of Florida in Gainesville. The Cavaliers (18-7) will be making their first NCAA Tournament appearance and face 14th-seeded Brigham Young (16-6) on May 12.
