KOREAN ARTIST SHOWS IN ABINGDON GALLERY

Soo Cha Griffith came to the United States from her native Korea planning to study home economics, but took up art instead.

Some of her impressionistic oil paintings are on display in the Spotlight Gallery of the Arts Depot through June 12.

She says she changed her major while studying at Auburn University because she loves to paint and be creative. She transferred to New Mexico State University where she earned her art degree. She is also a graduate of the Plattien Art Academy in the Netherlands, where she studied art and sculpting for three years.

Now living in Knoxville, Tenn., Griffith is a member of the Korean National Committee of the International and Korean Fine Arts Association, and of arts councils of Knoxville and Oak Ridge, Tenn. Her work has been exhibited at major galleries in the United States, Korea and the Netherlands.

She is also a member of the Depot Artists' Association, centered around a restored 122-year old depot building in Abingdon which now provides studio space for working artists. It also houses the Branson School of Ballet and Appalachian Center for Poets and Writers.

Most of Griffith's paintings in this exhibit were done within the past year. They seek to capture the natural beauty of the mountains, flowers, animals and people in the impressionist style. Her emphasis is on harmony, color and the arrangement as a whole.
