ESPN PICKS OAK HILL TEAM NO. 1
A crew from ESPN was in Mouth of Wilson on Wednesday to recognize Oak Hill
Academy as the nation's top prep basketball team. The Warriors (36-0) were
ranked No. 1 in the National Prep Poll that is carried on The Associated Press
wire and will be featured May 24 at 3 p.m. on Scholastic Sports America. Oak
Hill also was ranked No. 1 by Basketball Weekly and Basketball Times. "We've
finished second a couple of times," Oak Hill coach Steve Smith said, " [but]
this is the first time we've been ranked No. 1 by anybody. It's a real honor
for our program."
James P. Kite of Wolftown and two-time defending champion Bob Moyers, 57,
of New Market each shot a par 71 to share a one-shot, first-round lead at the
Virginia Senior Stroke Play Championship golf tournament at the 6,397-yard
Springfield Country Club course. Kite, 61, sank a 20-foot downhill putt for a
birdie on No. 18 to tie. The 36-hole tournament concludes today.
