F-C TAKES 2 FROM BASSETT IN BASEBALL

Fieldale-Collinsville remained in second place in the Piedmont District by beating Bassett 6-4 in the completion of a suspended game and then won the regularly scheduled contest 9-6 at Collinsville on Wednesday.

In the first game, the Cavaliers (13-1 overall, 13-1 district) won in the 10th inning as Brian Mayes walked, went to second on a wild pitch and, after David Purcell walked, scored on Jimmy Cox's two-run single.

Brian Alley went 3-for-5 with two RBI for Fieldale-Collinsville.

In the nightcap, the Cavaliers took a 9-0 lead before giving up six runs in the seventh. Todd Pringle had a two-run triple while Mayes doubled in two more runs to lead the F-C assault. Patrick Cobbs had two hits and drove in two runs to lead the seventh-inning uprising for Bassett. Brant Engstrom (6-0) picked up both wins, including his relief performance in the suspended game.

In other baseball action:

At Radford, the Bobcats defeated George Wythe 6-5 in a non-district game. Lee Watson stole home in the bottom of the seventh with the winning run for Radford (2-8). This climaxed a four-run rally by Radford in the inning. Travis Griffith's sacrifice fly scored the tying run. Then Derek Engelhard tried a suicide squeeze and missed, enabling Watson to steal home with the winning run. Matt Sark had two hits for George Wythe (5-7).

At Independence, Grayson County defeated Shawsville 7-4 in a Mountain Empire District game. Matthew Campbell struck out 12 and ran his record to 3-0 for Grayson County (7-5, 6-1) as he allowed six hits. He also tripled and homered. Ben Basham went 2-for-4 with a triple for Shawsville (7-5, 2-4). Grayson County freshman Chad Shaffner got the save when he got a double play and struck out the last hitter to escape a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the seventh inning.

At Daleville, Lord Botetourt left-hander Chad Shelton no-hit Pulaski County in a 7-0 Cavalier non-district victory. Shelton (2-2) struck out 11, didn't walk a batter and threw just 76 pitches. He missed a perfect game by one hit batsman and one Cavalier error.

At Auburn, B.W. Hill struck out nine batters, earned the pitching victory and was 3-for-3 at the plate as Fort Chiswell beat Auburn 5-3 in a Mountain Empire District game. Hill also drove in a run for Fort Chiswell. Auburn fell to 5-7, 2-5.

\ SOCCER: Jonathan Crabtree scored two goals as Laurel Park edged Fieldale-Collinsville 2-1 in a Piedmont District soccer match. The Lancers are 5-3, 5-2. Toby Underwood scored for the Cavaliers (1-5-1, 1-5-1).

Four players scored as host Martinsville beat Magna Vista 4-0 in a Piedmont District game. Link Shaw, Greg Barth, Eric Bremner and Matt Durand scored for the Bulldogs (8-5, 7-0).

\ SOFTBALL: At Alleghany, Salem beat Alleghany 9-7 in a Blue Ridge District game. The Mountaineers fell to 4-7, 3-4. Rhonda Rankin had two home runs for Salem (12-1, 6-1).

\ BOYS' TRACK: Glenvar finished an unbeaten Pioneer District schedule by scoring 132 points to beat Parry McCluer (77), Craig County (15) and Highland (8). Chad Wallace won three events - the long jump, triple jump and the 400-meter dash. He also ran a leg on the winning 400-meter relay. Ben Mahala won both hurdle races and was also on the 400-meter relay team. Parry McCluer's Robbie Dickinson won the shot and the discus.

At Salem, Northside's Jonathan Stewart won the 800- and 1,600-meter runs as Northside won a Blue Ridge District meet with 98 points over Salem (64), Alleghany (54) and Rockbridge (32). Salem's Keith Moyer won the 100- and 400-meter dashes.

\ GIRLS' TRACK: Trish Nervo (1,600- and 3,200-meters) and Emilee Hall (100- and 300-meter hurdles) were double winners as Glenvar (103) won a Pioneer District meet with Highland (53), Craig County (31) and Parry McCluer (24).
