BULLS' HOMERS NOT ENOUGH AS BUCS WIN 5-3

The Durham Bulls smacked three home runs and didn't commit an error, but the Salem Buccaneers still were better and won the Carolina League baseball game 5-3 Wednesday night on Ken Bonifay's two-run single in the eighth inning.

The three solo homers were all the scoring the Bulls managed as they lost their fourth straight, including three straight to the Bucs. Durham swept a four-game series in Salem last week.

Salem's Marty Neff hit a solo homer off starter Barry Chiles in the second inning, but Chiles still carried a 3-2 lead into the seventh when Durham's bullpen again found trouble. Reliever Tom Leahy (0-2) gave up a homer to the first batter he faced when Mike Brown launched a 1-0 pitch over the right-field wall to tie the score 3-3.

Leahy left in the eighth with two out and two on. Bonifay tagged his winning single off Kurt Burgess.

Salem starter Gary Wilson (3-0) was the winner, pitching six innings. He gave up all three Durham homers.
