The School Board voted unanimously to name Wright, 50, to fill the post vacated in late January by the resignation of Virginia East.
"I look forward to the challenges," Wright said.
East left the school system following her arrest on federal charges of possessing and passing counterfeit $100 bills at a factory outlet mall in Tennessee. East has since entered a federal program for first-time offenders with the possibility that charges eventually could be dropped.
Since East's departure, Wright had added the assistant superintendent's duties to those as director of elementary curriculum, director of vocational education and director of transportation.
The board's action could lead to a little confusion in the school system's front office. The superintendent is Michael Wright, who is no relation.
Randy Wright has been in the Radford school system for 28 years. He twice has been assistant principal at Radford High School. He has been an administrator in the system's front office for the past four years.
