The office provided a listing service that helped students and others in the university community find houses, apartments and roommates for off-campus living.
Tom Goodale, vice president for student affairs, said in a memo that it was difficult to justify the expense of the office, which was supported by residence hall fees, "as space needs and budget concerns continue to grow."
Goodale said that if another agency or organization was willing to provide the service in another location, the housing office would cooperate by transferring files and current materials.
"Students are concerned about the service not being available," Pam Winfrey, head of housing operations at Tech, said Friday. "We're hoping someone else will pick up the service."
The housing office had been run by two people on campus: an off-campus housing manager, who had been reassigned to other tasks two years ago, and a part-time housing services assistant, who will begin other duties on Monday.
The office in Eggleston is still being used for graduate and special purpose housing.
