Monro Muffler Brake Inc., a Rochester, N.Y., auto-repair chain with operations in Roanoke, on Monday reported that fourth-quarter net income rose 9.2 percent, to $950,000, or 14 cents a share, from $870,000, or 13 cents, in the 1992 quarter. Sales increased 11.2 percent, from $16 million last year to $17.8 million.
Comparable-shop sales were up 2.1 percent in the quarter, compared to an increase of 5.9 percent for last year's fourth quarter and 2.9 percent for 1992.
For the fiscal year, sales were $78.5 million, up $8.1 million, or 11.5 percent, from 1992. Net income was $6.2 million, up 7.9 percent from $5.7 million. Earnings per share were 89 cents, up from 84 cents the previous year.
\ May Department Stores
The May Department Stores Co., St. Louis-based parent of the Hecht's chain and Payless ShoeSource stores, on Monday reported first quarter earnings of $96 million, or 71 cents per share, up 18 percent from $81 million, or 60 cents per share in the year-ago period. Net retail sales were $2.32 billion, up 5.3 percent from $2.2 billion in the 1992 quarter.
