HIGHLANDERS SIGN FLOYD COUNTY GOLFER

Tim Bower of Floyd County High School has signed a letter of intent with Radford University's men's golf team. Bower, the Mountain Empire District individual champion, had a stroke average of 70.8 as a senior. He finished fourth in the Group A state tournament and was selected to the Roanoke Times & World-News All-Timesland first team.

In South Hadley, Mass., Anna Radford and Charlaine Coetzee of Longwood each shot a 78 at the Orchards Golf Course to share the first-round lead in the 54-hole NCAA Division II women's championships. Longwood has a four-player total of 320 for a 13-stroke lead over defending champion Rollins (Fla.) College.

Virginia Tech has hired Samuel Okpodu, who played and coached at North Carolina State, as the head coach of the new women's varsity soccer program, which begins play this fall. The team has had club status. Okpodu, 30, has been an assistant women's soccer coach at N.C. State for three years. Okpodu, from Nigeria, was a three-time All-American for N.C. State from 1981-1984.

Virginia announced the Cavaliers' first-round game against Notre Dame in the NCAA men's Division I lacrosse tournament Saturday will be at 1 p.m. at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville.

The ACC announced its men's all-conference lacrosse team, and for the third time it included Virginia attackman Kevin Pehlke.

Another Virginia player, freshman attackman Tim Whiteley, was voted the ACC rookie of the year.

ACC champion North Carolina, with seven selections, dominated the all-star team. Tar Heels junior midfielder Ryan Wade, who scored a team-high 23 goals, was voted ACC player of the year.

Pehlke, a senior from Annapolis, Md., lead the ACC in scoring with 53 points - 30 goals, which tied for the ACC lead, and 23 assists, a league high. He is UVa's career leader in goals with 134 and points with 232. Whitely is UVa's second leading scorer this season with 28 points on 12 goals and 16 assists.

The National Wrestling Coaches Association has chosen Virginia as one of its All-Academic Top 10 teams for 1993, and Virginia wrestler Howie Miller is on the All-Academic second team. The team honor is based on the grade-point averages of the team's 10 starters and two reserves. Virginia's grade-point average is 2.98. Miller, a sophomore from Allentown Pa., has a 3.427 GPA in a pre-business curriculum. He qualified for the NCAA Tournament at 167 pounds.
