LIBERTY JUST SQUEEZES BY

Greg Reynolds' suicide squeeze bunt scored Jerry Padgett in the bottom of the seventh inning as Liberty edged visiting Brookville 6-5 in a high school baseball game Monday.

Liberty's Curt Goff had three hits, including his seventh home run of the season, a three-run blast. Jamie Dooley won his first game in relief, striking out eight in four innings. Keith Carter and Jerry Padgett added two hits each for the Minutemen (10-5), who knocked the Bees (11-3) out of first place in the Seminole District.

In other baseball Monday:

Wayne Caldwell scattered four hits and struck out 11 as host Blacksburg beat Auburn 7-1 in a non-district game. Nobody had more than one hit for Blacksburg (7-7), which took advantage of nine walks and eight wild pitches.

At Altavista, Anthony Poindexter slugged a three-run homer and Jefferson Forest roughed up Altavista 15-3. Teddy Wilson and Mark Tyler combined to strike out 11 and pitch a six-hitter for the Cavaliers (11-3).

At Buchanan, Staunton River (5-9, 5-9) roared back from a two-run deficit in the bottom of the sixth to defeat visiting William Campbell 5-3 in a Seminole District game. The big hit was Brandon Creasey's two-run single with two outs. William Campbell is 7-7 and 7-7.

\ SOFTBALL: At Covington, Tracy Shaffer went 4-for-5 with three RBI to power Alleghany to a 16-10 win over Parry McCluer (8-5). Tracy Cummings and Alania Bartley each added three hits for Alleghany (5-7).

At Rocky Mount, Michelle Hudson pitched a nine-strikeout one-hitter as Franklin County (9-6) flattened visiting Heritage 5-0 in a non-district game.

At Brookville, Melissa Dooley and Tandy Gordon each drove in three runs as Liberty (10-3-1) defeated Brookville 15-5 in a Seminole District game.

At Cave Spring, five errors led to eight unearned runs and Cave Spring (11-2, 6-0) rolled over William Fleming 16-1 in a Roanoke Valley District game. Ellen Jamison of Cave Spring went 2-for-2 with an RBI, and Pam Bogunia went 2-for-2 with two stolen bases.

At North Cross, Virginia Episcopal defeated North Cross 8-4 in a non-conference game. Blair Calvert drove in all four runs for the Raiders (6-6).

Gretna exploited 10 errors by host Bassett (7-8, 7-8) to claim a 14-6 Piedmont District victory. Kim Hughes struck out seven, walked 13, and gave up seven hits for Gretna (11-5, 11-5).

Roanoke Valley Christian (10-4) had 38 hits while sweeping a doubleheader from the Virginia School for the Deaf 21-1 and 22-0.

\ SOCCER: At Salem, Sterling Turner and Aaron Gresham each scored three goals as Salem torched Alleghany 13-0. Owen Woodward added two goals for the Spartans.

At Bedford, Joel Allen scored three goals as Liberty routed Jefferson Forest 6-1. John Ayers made seven saves for the Minutemen (8-2). The Cavaliers are 8-1-1.

At Buchanan, Rockbridge County rallied from three goals down to defeat James River 8-5.

\ BOYS' TENNIS: Top-seeded Blacksburg won all but No. 3 doubles to to surge past Carroll County 8-1 and into the final of the New River District tournament at the Dedmon Center in Radford. The Indians' opponents will be Christiansburg, which beat Radford 5-4 after the match came down the No. 3 doubles match in which David Powers and Scott Akers defeated Matthew Long and Rajiv Tayal 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. The team final will be at 4 p.m. today.

\ GIRLS' TENNIS: Radford will be aiming for its 13th-straight New River District Tournament crown after beating Christiansburg 7-2 at the Dedmon Center. The Bobcats will play Blacksburg, which beat Carroll County 9-0, in the team finals at 4 p.m. today.
