RED SOX SIGN EX-HOKIE TO MINOR-LEAGUE CONTRACT

The Boston Red Sox signed former major-league first baseman and outfielder Franklin Stubbs to a minor-league contract Wednesday.

Stubbs, who agreed to a Triple A contract, was signed in 1990 to a three-year, $6 million, contract by the Milwaukee Brewers. He eventually was released by the Brewers when he accepted a buyout of the remaining $1.8 million, sacrificing $400,000.

He was signed by the Montreal Expos, but they released him in spring training.

The move coincided with the Red Sox releasing Sean Ross, an outfielder.

Stubbs, a former Virginia Tech standout, is expected to play first base with the Pawtucket Red Sox.
