WHO, WHERE & WHEN

Special fund-raiser

Virginia Special Olympics asks volunteers to participate in its May 22 fund-raiser, "The Night of 100 Dinners."

Volunteer hosts are needed to give a dinner as part of a state-wide effort to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics, a year-round program of sports training and competition for citizens with mental disabilities.

Dinner hosts will throw a party, big or small, invite whoever they wish, and serve whatever they wish. Diners, in turn, pay a per-plate fee determined by the host. The money will benefit Special Olympics.

Host packets containing invitations and more information are available by calling (800) 526-6130.

Price, Bowman to sign

Writers Charles Edwin Price and Lowry Bowman will sign books at Main Street Books in Abingdon on Saturday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Price is the author of "The Mystery of Ghostly Vera," a collection of 24 Southwest Virginia ghost stories. Bowman's "Confessions of a Dark-Barker" is a collection of essays based on his Washington County news column from 1966-1985.

Main Street Books is at 152 E. Main St. For more information, call 628-4506.

Lunch with novelist

Novelist Ann Goethe will attend a book and author luncheon May 20 at the Reynolds Homestead in Critz.

Goethe, writer of "Midnight Lemonade," which is this spring's alternate for both the Literary Guild and the Doubleday Book Club, was the homestead's writer-in-residence in 1991.

The lunch costs $15, and pre-registration is necessary by Tuesday. Call 694-7181 for more information.
