Martinsville had 98 points to beat out second-place Magna Vista's 83 points. Gretna's Keith Grant, who won the 100- and 200- meter dashes, and Patrick County's James Clanton (800- and 1,600-meter runs) were the only double winners. Martinsville got firsts from Mike Martin (110 hurdles), Gravely McQuail (300 hurdles) and its 1,600-meter relay.
In the girls' meet, the Lancers had 139 points to far outdistance Martinsville's 88. Martinsville's Robin Fitzgerald (discus and shot put) and Laurel Park's Valencia Eggleston (100- and 300-meter hurdles) and Miranda Hairston (1,600 and 3,200-meter runs) were the double winners. Fitzgerald set a meet record in the discus with a throw of 115 feet, 6 inches.

\ GIRLS' TENNIS: Martinsville defeated Fieldale-Collinsville 6-3 for the Piedmont District championship at Bassett on Tuesday. In semifinals, the Bulldogs got a bye while Fieldale-Collinsville stopped Bassett 8-1. In singles, Patrick County's Tina Castillo beat Kristi Westmoreland of Martinsville 6-2, 6-1 for the title. In the semifinals, Castillo downed Fieldale-Collinsville's Amy Clark 6-3, 6-1 and Westmoreland beat Bassett's Lori Wimbush 6-1, 6-1. In doubles, Clark and Angie Eggleston of Fieldale-Collinsville beat Wimbush and Waller in the semifinals 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 and then won the title by stopping Westmoreland and Lauren Turner 7-6, 6-1.
\ BASEBALL: At New Castle, Jason Booth hit a two-run home run and led Shawsville (10-6) to 14-4 victory over Craig County (4-12). Johnny Crawford hit a solo homer for Craig County, which gave up several unearned runs after errors.
On Tuesday at Buena Vista, John Rogers' bases-loaded single in the top of the eighth inning gave Bath County a 1-0 Pioneer District victory. John Woodzell started the rally with a single, advanced to second on an error and to third on another hit. Rogers' hit came with two out. Bath County is 6-3 in the district; Parry McCluer is 3-10 and 3-5.
