ALLEGHANY'S HUNTER SHINES IN BLUE RIDGE

After a full day of track and field decisions measured in split-seconds and inch-fractions, the biggest drama of the day lasted 75 minutes.

A downpour, punctuated with lightning and thunder, interrupted the Blue Ridge District Track Meet held at Salem High School on Wednesday. The event will be completed today at 4:30 p.m.

Alleghany's Michael Hunter won three events, finished second in two events and set two meet records. Hunter and teammate Shawn Burks, who also won two events, helped Alleghany take a 105-97 lead over second-place Northside. Four of the meet's 16 events remain on the card.

In the girls' competition, Jennifer Vest of Rockbridge won the 100 meters, the 300 hurdles and the triple jump (by an inch) to lead her team to a five-point edge over second-place Alleghany. The girls have five events remaining.

Hunter set a meet record in the long jump at 22 feet, 10\ inches, more than nine inches beyond the previous meet mark set in 1977 but only three-quarters of an inch better than Salem's Keith Moyer leaped Wednesday. Hunter also was best in the triple jump (45-5 3/4).

In the closest contest of the day, Northside's Darius Henderson and Salem's Moyer finished virtually in a dead heat in the 400 meters, with times of 50.4. Both bettered the meet record of 50.6, but the victory was awarded to Henderson after a review of the videotape.
