HIGHLANDERS PUT 4 ON BIG SOUTH TEAM

At Myrtle Beach, S.C., the Big South Conference baseball coaches announced their all-conference team with fifth-place Radford landing four spots, the most of any team.

Radford's honorees are shortstop Tom Curran, who hit .341; utility infielder Danny Van Pelt, who hit .359; outfielder Duane Filchner, who hit .407 with a school record 55 RBI; and designated hitter Brian Pardue who hit .370.

Radford begins Big South tournament play today at 9:30 a.m. against second-place Coastal Carolina, which has the league's player of the year, Kevin Lowe, and the coach of the year, John Jancuska.

Virginia has received a bid to the Division I men's golf championship and will begin play May 19 in the East Regional at Birdwood, UVa's home course in Charlottesville. Of the nine ACC programs, only Maryland won't be among the 22 teams at Birdwood. The top 10 teams after 54 holes will advance to the NCAA finals June 2-5 at The Champions in Lexington, Ky. Men's golf is the seventh sport in which UVa has received an NCAA berth this year and fourth spring sport, joining men's and women's lacrosse and women's tennis.

Fourteenth-ranked Brigham Young spoiled Virginia's first appearance in the NCAA women's tennis championships with a 5-3 victory on Wednesday in Gainesville, Fla. The Cavaliers, ranked 22nd nationally, finished 18-8, a school record for number of wins. Jen Callen, Alison Cohen and Ly-Lan Schofield earned singles victories for Virginia. Callen, the 23rd-ranked player in the country, will compete in the singles competition beginning May 17.

Virginia signed a junior golfer from Canada to a letter of intent. Jeremy Julie of Fenwick, Ontario, was a third-team American Junior Golf Association All-American last year and the Ontario Junior Champion in 1991.

Longwood College of Farmville, Va., won the NCAA Division II women's golf championship in South Hadley, Mass. Longwood, runner-up the past two years, won its fourth title in seven seasons with a 54-hole total of 945. The 39-stroke victory over defending champion Rollins College of Florida was a record. Charlaine Coetzee of South Africa, with rounds of 78, 70 and 73 over the par-72 Orchards Golf Course for a 221 total, led Longwood's sweep of the top three places; Anna Radford of England was second at 234; and Brenda Campbell-Harris of South Africa was third at 236.
