State police said Elizabeth Martin McMurray, 62, of Fourth Street, Radford, died instantly at about 8 a.m. Her sister, Letitia Clarke Bloch, 56, of Rockford, Mich., died about an hour later at Radford Community Hospital.
Police said McMurray was driving south on U.S. 11 when she attempted to turn left onto Virginia 747, just below the New River Valley Speedway. McMurray turned in front of a northbound car driven by Karen Akers, 35, of Dublin.
Trooper Kenny Blevins said Akers, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Radford Community Hospital. He was unsure if both sisters were wearing seat belts.
A Radford Community Hospital spokeswoman said Akers was treated at the hospital, then transferred to Roanoke Memorial Hospital where she is listed as being in serious condition.
