SPARTANS SWEEP TENNIS COMPETITION IN BLUE RIDGE

Salem swept the boys' and girls' competition at the Blue Ridge District tennis finals on Wednesday at the Salem Civic Center.

Eddel Veloso defeated Jay Gilliland of Lord Botetourt 6-3, 6-2 for the boys' singles crown and then teamed with David Arnold to defeat Aaron Church and Jeremy Gray of Northside 7-5, 6-1 for the doubles title.

Salem's Jill Archer also was a two-time winner. In singles, she defeated Erin Fox of Rockbridge County 6-3, 6-4, then she teamed with Ashley McCrary to defeat Fox and Mary Cecil 7-6, 3-6, 7-5 for the doubles championship.

The winners advance to Region 3 competition. The girls compete May 18-19 at Salem; the boys will play May 21-22 at Fieldale-Collinsville.

In other high school sports:

\ BASEBALL: At New Castle, Jason Booth hit a two-run home run and led Shawsville (10-6) to a 14-4 victory over Craig County (4-12). Johnny Crawford hit a solo homer for Craig County.

\ SOCCER: At Buchanan, James River and Alleghany tied 2-2 in a non-district game. Michael Broughman scored both James River goals, one on an assist from Isaac Minnis. Eddie Cox and Neal Helsley scored for Alleghany. The teams played a scoreless overtime period. James River is 0-8-2 overall.

At River's Edge, Miller School defeated Roanoke Catholic 2-1 in a Virginia Independent Conference game as Jimmy McLeod and Jason Noe scored goals. Jeff Deyerle scored for Catholic (4-8, 1-5).

At William Byrd, the Terriers (12-2, 10-0) completed an unbeaten Blue Ridge District season by bombing Rockbridge County 11-0. Andy McCaskill, Michael Berry and Kevin Niday each scored twice for Byrd, and Jason Criss had the shutout in goal. Rockbridge County finished 1-9 in the district.
