Dave Doorneweerd won his second straight decision, giving up two hits over six innings, and the Bucs roughed up the Kinston Indians for nine hits and two stolen bases in an 8-5 Carolina League baseball victory played in off-and-on showers at Municipal Field.
The victory, Salem's ninth in its past 12 outings, brought the Bucs to one game behind the Indians in the Southern Division.
Salem (15-16) scored three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-1 lead before slipshod defensive work began to betray it for the second-straight night. The Bucs had yielded four unearned runs in a 7-6 loss to the Indians to open the homestand Tuesday.
This time, three errors led to two more unearned runs. Two of the miscues were by Marty Neff, who had a rare start at third base. Neff, who also had had a costly muff in right field the previous night, nevertheless atoned Wednesday with a three-run homer in the fourth, his league-leading 10th of the year.
Angelo Encarnacion, batting ninth, Tony Womack in leadoff and Keith Thomas, hitting No. 3, each had two hits and drove in a run. Encarnacion scored twice.
The story, though, was Doorneweerd (2-2), who struck out five and retired the last 11 batters he faced. The only blemish was Paul Meade's third-inning homer, his second of the series and fourth of the year.
After a ragged eighth-inning appearance by left-hander Jim Martin - who allowed three hits and three runs, two earned and hit a batter in one-third of an inning - Jason Christiansen and Jeff McCurry conspired to shut down the Indians the rest of the way. One of Neff's errors led to an unearned run for Christiansen, and McCurry worked a perfect ninth for his league-leading ninth save.
\ BUCSHOTS: Salem continued to juggle its roster. Pitcher Mike Teich (1-0, 3.50 ERA) was given his unconditional release. Infielder Kevin Polcovich returned from Carolina, and Don Garvey was sent back to Augusta. . . . The start of the game was delayed by 51 minutes because of rain.
