FLOYD COUNTY BOYS TOP MOUNTAIN EMPIRE TRACK

The Floyd County boys' team outscored Giles 32-12 in the last three events to win the Mountain Empire District track meet 153-145 1/2 at Independence on Friday. The Spartans had led by 6 1/2 points.

Steve Johnson of Giles captured wins in four events to lead all competitors. He won the long jump, triple jump, high jump and 100 meters.

In the girls' meet, Giles outscored Floyd County 57-15 in distance races to capture first place. The two teams won seven events each.

Monica Lucas of Floyd led the girls field, winning the long jump, triple jump, 100-, 200-, and 400-meter races.

Giles won with 187 points, followed by Floyd County with 164 and Auburn with 50.

\ BASEBALL: Zack Foley tossed a six-hitter with nine strikeouts and Brian Hawks, Steve Dalton, Casey Herbin, and Willie Bryant each hit home runs - Hawks' a grand slam - as host Carroll County clobbered Radford 14-3 in a New River District baseball game.

Carroll County (13-2 overall, 5-0 in the district) clinched at least a tie for the regular-season district championship.

Derek Englehard hit the first pitch of the game for a home run for Radford (1-4 in the distric).

At Bassett, Patrick Hobbs went 3-for-3 to lead the Bengals to a 6-1 Piedmont District victory over Gretna.

William Byrd clinched the Blue Ridge District title with a 4-3 victory over visiting Lord Botetourt.

C.D. Polumbo scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh on an error by Cavaliers pitcher Chad Shelton. Shelton overthrew third base trying to pick off Polumbo. Chris Carr (5-0) earned a complete-game victory for William Byrd (15-0, 8-0). He struck out nine batters, gave up seven hits and had no walks. Kenny Richardson was 2-for-3 at the plate.

At Floyd, Mike Blankenship cracked a two-run homer and Sean Harris drove in the winning run in the seventh inning as Narrows defeated the Buffaloes 3-2 in a Mountain Empire District game. Monty Moran and Tater Thompson drove in runs for Floyd County (12-6, 6-3).

Glenvar's Trevor Willis broke open a close game with a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Highlanders went on to score seven runs with two outs and beat Craig County 8-5 in a Pioneer District game on the Highlanders' field. Glenvar (6-4-1 overall, 6-2 in the district) has a six-game winning streak.

Tommy Lee hurled a four-hitter, striking out six, and Ryan Blevins stroked a two-run home run as Salem held off Rockbridge County 4-2 in a Blue Ridge District game on the Spartans diamond. Salem is 8-8 overall, 2-7.

At Hot Springs, four Covington players hit solo home runs to defeat Bath County 4-1 in a Pioneer District contest.

The Chargers (6-6, 6-4 Pioneer) took a 1-0 lead off a single and error in the third inning.

Cougar shortstop Charlie Carper smashed a homer with two outs in the fifth and pitcher Jeff Tucker followed with another to give Covington (8-9, 8-3) a 2-1 lead. Mark Folks blasted a homer with two outs in the sixth and Jeff Brewster followed with the Cougars last run.

At Blacksburg, Brock Whitlock smashed a two-run homer as Christiansburg downed the host Indians 9-6 to earn their first New River District victory. Whitlock, Jamie Gillespie and Toby Duncan each had two hits for the Demons (5-11, 1-4 New River). Jay Safford hit 3-for-4 with 3 RBI to lead Blacksburg (7-8, 3-2).

David Dixon's two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning tied the score, and he added a two-out run-scoring single in the fifth to put Alleghany ahead for good as the Mountaineers beat guest Northside 5-3 in a Blue Ridge District game. Kelly Dampeer stole home and Ben Taylor had a two-run home run for Northside (5-4 in the district). Jason Linskwiler and Dixon each had had three hits, and Nolan Caldwell improved to 5-0 with 5 innings of work for the Mounties (13-3 overall, 5-3 in the district).

\ SOFTBALL: Michelle Harrison, Rhonda Rankin and Yo Helm each had four hits, and Salem hammered homestanding Rockbridge County 29-0 in a Blue Ridge District game.

Stacy Byrd's two-out run-scoring single with the bases loaded in the ninth inning lifted Northside to a 5-4 Blue Ridge District victory over guest Alleghany. Northside is 4-9, 2-7.
