SOCCER-AMERICAN HARKES STARS IN DEBUT

In Wembley, England, John Harkes not only became the first American to play in an English Football Association Cup final, he helped his team by setting up the game-tying goal.

Harkes, a 26-year-old midfielder from Kearny, N.J., found teammate David Hirst with a well-placed header in the 61st minute as Sheffield Wednesday tied Arsenal 1-1 in England's equivalent of the Super Bowl. The teams will replay the match on Thursday night.

"Nothing but good thoughts," said Harkes, a former star at the University of Virginia. "It was a good goal."
