BLACKSBURG TURNS BACK CARROLL 8-3

Jay Safford, Wayne Caldwell, and James Shealor had two runs batted in each and Blacksburg defeated Carroll County and previously unbeaten pitcher Brad Leonard 8-3 in a New River District game on the Indians' diamond Tuesday.

Caldwell scattered nine hits and struck out five to go the distance for the victory. Brian Hawks had three hits and drove in two runs for the Cavaliers. Carroll County (13-3 overall, 5-1 in the district) draws the top seed and plays Radford in the district tournament that starts Tuesday in Hillsville. Blacksburg (8-8, 4-2), the No. 2 seed, will play Christiansburg.

In other baseball:

Dan Vipperman had two hits and drove in two runs, Ken Houtz added a bases-loaded double and Galax (5-7) went on to a 11-6 victory over visiting Rocky Gap in a Mountain Empire District tournament play-in game. Junior Long, just up from the junior varsity, struck out nine and gave up six hits to record his first varsity victory. Galax (5-7) plays at Grayson County to open the tournament Thursday.

Auburn's Jared Gardner gave up four hits and added three hits and two RBI as Auburn routed Bland 12-2 in a Mountain Empire District game shortened to five innings because of the 10-run rule. Gerald Reed added three hits and scored two runs, and Jeremy West and Todd Collins combined for seven RBI for the Eagles.

A trio of Bath County pitchers limited Highland to a combined three hits in a Pioneer District double-header and went on to sweep a twinbill 10-3 and 3-2. Kyle Arnott hit a two-run home run for Highland in the second game. Bath County is 9-6 overall, 8-4 league.

\ SOFTBALL: Renee Kopstein had a two-run home run and struck out nine and Jennie Kallio went 3-for-4 and scored three runs as Cave Spring routed Patrick Henry 13-2 to finish the Roanoke Valley District season 9-0 (14-2) overall.\ BOYS' TENNIS: At Lexington, Glenvar won both the Pioneer District individual singles and doubles tennis championships. Nick Varney took the singles crown with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over teammate Eric Starkloff. They teamed up to win the doubles championship over another Glenvar duo, Wes Jones and Richie Bryant 6-3, 6-0. Glenvar champions advance to the Region C tournament in Galax next week. In the singles semifinals, the Glenvar players ousted Scott McCormick and Scott Deyo of Parry McCluer. McCormick-Deyo and another Parry McCluer team of Brian Marlatt and Paul Majors were eliminated in the doubles semifinals.

In the Piedmont District boys' team semifinals, Martinsville defeated Bassett 5-1 and will meet Fieldale-Collinsville in the team championship. The Martinsville-Bassett result was incorrectly reported Tuesday.

\ SOCCER: At Northside on Monday, J.J. Larson scored three goals to lead Northside to a 7-3 victory over Alleghany in the first round of the Blue Ridge District Tournament. Ryan Wickstrom and Igor Marcello each added two goals for the Vikings (6-6-2) and Aaron Curtiss had two assists. For Alleghany (3-10), Brad Bizell scored two goals and Ed Deeds had two assists.
