CAVE SPRING PREVAILS 3-1 IN SOCCER

Jamie Garcerant scored two goals and Keith Cox had another as Cave Spring beat William Fleming 3-1 in the opening round of the Roanoke Valley District soccer tournament on the Knights' field.

Kelly Graham scored the only goal for Fleming.

The Knights (10-4-1) will play the winner of the Pulaski County-Patrick Henry game, which was halted by lightning with 11 minutes to go in the second half and PH leading 3-2. A decision whether or not the game will be completed or left as it stands will be made today by the RVD principals.

In other soccer:

Bedford County rivals Liberty and Jefferson Forest were eliminated in the Group AA Seminole District tournament semifinals Tuesday in Bedford.

Brookville advanced to the final with a 3-1 victory over Liberty. Joel Allen had the Minutemen's goal. Rustburg blanked Jefferson Forest 4-0. Brookville and Rustburg meet for the district title Thursday at 7 p.m. at Bedford.

\ BASEBALL: Jay Safford, Wayne Caldwell, and James Shealor had two runs batted in each and Blacksburg defeated visiting Carroll County and previously unbeaten pitcher Brad Leonard 8-3 in a New River District game.

Christiansburg right-hander Jason Basham pitched a three-hitter and extended his scoreless string on the mound to 12 innings in a 5-0 New River baseball blanking of visiting Radford. Basham, a senior, pushed his record to 3-3 with 10 strikeouts for the Blue Demons (6-11 overall, 2-4 district).

Kevin Davis homered twice and had all six RBI as host Cave Spring beat Franklin County 6-2 and nailed down the Roanoke Valley District regular-season title and a berth in the Group AAA Northwestern Regional tournament. Kevin Vineyard struck out six in a complete-game victory that improved his record to 7-1. The Knights (13-4 overall, 10-1 district) beat Franklin County (9-5, 7-3) for the third time this year. This is the sixth time in eight years Cave Spring has qualified for regionals.

Pulaski County hung on after blowing an eight-run lead but managed to survive for a 10-9 Roanoke Valley District victory over Patrick Henry at Maher Field. The Patriots (2-15 overall, 2-9 district) scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run on third base when the game ended. Tom Cruise had three hits including a home run for the Cougars (3-14, 3-8). Jeremy Bailey drove in three runs for the Patriots.

Auburn's Jared Gardner gave up four hits and added three hits and two RBI as Auburn routed Bland 12-2 in a Mountain Empire District game shortened to five innings because of the 10-run rule. Gerald Reed added three hits and scored two runs, and Jeremy West and Todd Collins combined for seven RBI for the Eagles.

\ SOFTBALL: Patty Campbell hit two homers and Wanda Toney added one as Franklin County rolled to a 23-2 Roanoke Valley District softball victory over winless William Fleming at Breckinridge Middle School. Michele Hudson was the winning pitcher for the Eagles (11-7 overall, 5-4 RVD).
