BUCCANEERS DOWN LYNCHBURG ON BALK

Lynchburg pitcher Dan Gakeler balked in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and the Salem Buccaneers went on to a 4-2 Carolina League baseball victory over the Red Sox on Tuesday in a game called after seven innings by rain.

Salem designated hitter Marcus Ponder hit his second single of the night off loser Scott Bakkum (1-6) who then walked Ken Bonifay and Mike Brown to load the bases with no outs in the sixth. Gakeler, a former pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, replaced Bakkum and balked on a pitch to third baseman Marty Neff that scored Ponder. Neff then singled in Bonifay to provide the final margin.

The Bucs (18-19) scored two runs in the fourth inning. Mike Brown singled in a run and later scored on a wild pitch by Bakkum. Salem manager Scott Little was ejected in the inning for arguing a call.

The Red Sox (15-23) got their runs in the bottom of the fourth on a John Eierman home run. The right fielder's fifth homer of the year scored Bill Selby, who went 3-for-3.

Doug Harrah (1-0) threw six innings to earn the victory. He gave up two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out four. Kevin Rychel faced one batter in the seventh and got his first save of the season.

The victory pulled the Bucs out of the basement of the Southern Division, one game behind leader Kinston.
