JUDGE OVERTURNS BAN ON ASSISTING SUICIDES

A Michigan judge Thursday overturned the state's new law banning assisted suicide, clearing the way for retired pathologist Jack Kevorkian to continue his practice of helping people to kill themselves.

The decision by Wayne County Circuit Judge Cynthia D. Stephens also apparently short-circuited an investigation into the death of Ronald Mansur, who committed suicide in Kevorkian's presence in a Detroit real estate office Sunday.

Earlier Thursday, before the ruling, Detroit police searched Kevorkian's apartment in suburban Royal Oak, Mich., but Kevorkian's lawyer said there no longer is a law under which the man known as "Dr. Death" could be prosecuted.
