BULLDOGS BLANK BASSETT FOR PIEDMONT SOCCER TITLE

Carson Shearer scored two goals Friday as Martinsville shut out visiting Bassett 5-0 to win the championship game of the Piedmont District boys' soccer tournament.

Greg Barth, Link Shaw and Marty Martin added a goal each for the Bulldogs and Byron Reeves assisted on two scores. Martinsville outshot the Bengals 42-6.

Both teams advance to the Region III tournament held at Liberty on Monday. The Bulldogs will play Brookville at 5 p.m., and Bassett will face Northside at 7.

In other high school sports:

\ BOYS' TENNIS: Eddel Veloso of Salem and Fabio Pinto of Brookville led their teams to semifinal victories in the Region III tournament and set the stage for their personal showdown for the individual championship.

Veloso dispatched Brian Biga of Martinsville 6-1, 6-0, and Pinto blanked Stuart Cox of Fieldale-Collinsville 6-0, 6-0. It will be Pinto and Todd Williams of Brookville against Veloso and Salem teammate David Arnold for the doubles crown.

Brookville won every set and lost only six games in singles in defeating Fieldale-Collinsville 7-2. Salem didn't lose a set in either singles or doubles in a 9-0 rout of Martinsville.

\ GIRLS' TENNIS: At Radford, Myra Stevenson of Richlands defeated Cathy Richardson of Radford 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 to advance to the Region IV singles final Tuesday in Kingsport, Tenn. Richardson and Ashleigh Funk from Radford made the doubles final with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Sara Lazenby and Lesley Roberts of Graham. Stevenson will play Nicolle Naff from Lee County; Richardson and Funk will play Nan Morefield and Emelie Collins of Abingdon.

At Salem, Rustburg advanced to the state team tournament in Winchester with a 6-3 win over Rockbridge County in the Region III championship match. In the individual doubles final, Jill Archer and Ashley McCrary of Salem defeated Kersten Cardwell and Rhonda Lee of Rustburg 6-2, 6-3 to qualify for state play on June 2-3. Archer fell to Rustburg's Karonlyn Brochert 6-3, 6-2 in the individual singles final.

\ BASEBALL: At Blacksburg, the Indians needed a seven-run fifth inning to beat upset-minded Radford 10-8. The Bobcats (4-13) led 6-0 after two innings and got a 3-for-4 performance from Derek Englehard. Greg Shockley had a two-run single and Brian Davis and Michael Donohue also drove in a run in the fifth for Blacksburg (9-8).

At Moneta, Teddy Wilson and Carter Lee combined on a four-hitter as Jefferson Forest (14-4) clinched a second-place tie in the Seminole District with a 3-1 victory over Staunton River (7-11). Wilson struck out six batters in the first three innings and Lee had six strikeouts in the last four.

At Lexington, Gary Tyree pitched the win and went 2-for-3 at the plate as Rockbridge County knocked off Northside 3-2. Kevin Staten knocked in two runs with two hits for the Wildcats.
