UVA FAILS TO ADVANCE IN GOLF

Brian Gay of Florida captured individual honors and team medalist Clemson was one of six ACC teams that advanced to the NCAA Division I men's golf championship after Friday's final round of the East Regional at Birdwood golf course in Charlottesville.

UVa's final-round total of 287 was fourth out of 22 teams, but the Cavaliers finished 12th overall, five shots behind the three teams that tied for ninth and received the last three NCAA championship bids.

Gay closed with a 5-under-par 67, which gave him a 54-hole total of 206, four shots better than Bobby Doolittle of Clemson. Doolittle's final-round 66 was the low score of the tournament. David Duval of Georgia Tech and Bill Smith of North Carolina tied for third at 211.

In other college sports:

Ferrum's Matt Jordan finished in a tie for 62nd place at the NCAA Division III men's golf tournament at La Jolla, Calif. Jordan's 318 total left him 24 shots behind winner Ryan Jenkins of Methodist (N.C.) College. Gretna's Graham Andrews, a former Scott Robertson Memorial winner, finished in a tie for 51st. UC San Diego won the team championship by 12 shots over Ohio Wesleyan.

Georgia Tech junior catcher Jason Varitek was named player of the year and the Yellow Jackets placed three other players on the All-ACC baseball team announced Friday. Second baseman Tom Crowley, eighth in the league in batting with a .338 average, was Virginia's lone representative.

Jim Morris, who led Georgia Tech to a 45-12 record and the regular-season championship, was named ACC coach of the year and Florida State pitcher Jonathan Johnson was selected top rookie.

Varitek leads the ACC in eight offensive categories, including batting average (.417), home runs (22) and runs batted in (70). Johnson is 8-1 with a 1.66 earned-run average.

At Kalamazoo, Mich., Washington and Lee's Robby MacNaughton was eliminated in first-round singles at the NCAA Division III men's tennis championships. Emory's Jim Burns defeated MacNaughton 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. In first-round doubles play, Scott Sherman and John Foster of Kenyon defeated W&L's MacNaughton and Peter Hammond 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.
