Many of the drivers who qualified solidly on the first two days of time trials methodically and contentedly worked on their race day setups, while those still hoping to make the 33-car field doggedly tried to find enough speed to get the job done.
Seven spots remain open for the race going into the final two days of qualifications today and Sunday. The 33 fastest qualifiers start the race.
Among the non-qualified drivers trying to get in are Willy T. Ribbs, Jim Crawford and rookie Robby Gordon, the full-time driver for newly retired four-time Indy winner Foyt.
Nigel Mansell, the reigning Formula One champion and Indy rookie, who qualified in the middle of the third row, was fastest Friday, turning a lap of 225.468 mph.
