EAGLES FALL; CAVE SPRING CAPTURES RVD SOFTBALL TITLE

At Shell Field, Cave Spring breezed through the Roanoke Valley District softball tournament on Friday with a 13-0 semifinal win over William Fleming and a 11-4 championship victory over Franklin County.

In the title game, Ellen Jamison, Melissa Grimm and Sally Cadwell each drove in two runs for the Knights and Jennie Kallio pitched the win.

In the semifinals, Renee Kopstein struck out 12 and pitched a no-hitter while Jamison had three hits and Grimm drove in three. Franklin County downed Patrick Henry 5-1 in the other semifinal.

In other softball:

At Salem, Janell Sowers pitched a complete-game victory as Lord Botetourt edged Salem 3-2 to force a playoff for the Blue Ridge District regular-season championship. Both teams are 9-1 in the district and they will break the tie on Monday at a site to be announced.

\ BASEBALL: At Rocky Mount, Franklin County concluded the Roanoke Valley District regular season with a 4-3, 8-6 doubleheader sweep of Patrick Henry. Riley Hodge's solo home run in the bottom of the eighth lifted the Eagles in the opener.

Billy Cole hit a grand slam and Will Goodman pitched a complete-game five-hitter as Cave Spring raised its Roanoke Valley District record to 11-1 with a 16-2 victory over William Fleming. Kevin Davis slugged a two-run homer for the Knights. Marvin Brown drove in both runs for William Fleming, which fell victim to an eight-run second inning in dropping to 5-10.

At Lexington, Gary Tyree pitched the win and went 2-for-3 at the plate as Rockbridge County knocked off Northside 3-2.

\ BOYS' TENNIS: Eddel Veloso of Salem and Fabio Pinto of Brookville led their teams to semifinal victories in the Region III tournament and set the stage for their personal showdown for the individual championship.

Veloso dispatched Brian Biga of Martinsville 6-1, 6-0, and Pinto blanked Stuart Cox of Fieldale-Collinsville 6-0, 6-0. It will be Pinto and Todd Williams of Brookville against Veloso and Salem teammate David Arnold for the doubles crown.

Brookville won every set and lost only six games in singles in defeating Fieldale-Collinsville 7-2. Salem didn't lose a set in either singles or doubles in a 9-0 rout of Martinsville.

\ GIRLS' TENNIS: At Salem, Rustburg advanced to the state team tournament in Winchester with a 6-3 win over Rockbridge County in the Region III championship match. In the individual doubles final, Jill Archer and Ashley McCrary of Salem defeated Kersten Cardwell and Rhonda Lee of Rustburg 6-2, 6-3 to qualify for state play on June 2-3. Archer fell to Rustburg's Karonlyn Brochert 6-3, 6-2 in the individual singles final.
