FIRST, FIX ROADS MOST TRAVELED

I WOULD like to add my voice to the chorus of disapproval expressed in this paper over the construction of a "smart" road to the Blacksburg-Christiansburg area.

Perhaps more study should be done on the limited volume of traffic to use this road, and consideration given instead to use the money for improvements on dangerous, heavily traveled routes such as Route 220. On a recent race weekend in Martinsville, 62,000 people traveled over poorly, engineered roads in Southwestern Virginia. Can the volume to Blacksburg compare, particularly when Interstate 81 and Route 460 are already in place?

I consider this "smart" road an unwise use of tax dollars. Let's fix what we have before starting on a project that is unnecessary. CLARENCE FERGUSON ROANOKE
