FRATERNITY MEMBERS GO ON TRIAL IN BEATING

University of Mississippi officials say Kappa Sigma members have completed requirements imposed on them after a barroom brawl in Virginia, but the six members charged in the fight still must face trial.

The six white fraternity members are scheduled to be in Charlottesville, Va., for a one-day trial today. They face misdemeanor charges that they punched and kicked a black manager at Crazy Charlie's Bar and Grill when he asked them to leave.

Two earlier hearings in the case - Feb. 19 and March 22 - were postponed. Usual penalties for such charges are fines and suspended sentences.

Employees at the restaurant said the brawl was racially motivated.

After the Jan. 22 incident, Ole Miss officials suspended the fraternity from campus activities until Aug. 1. Other sanctions were imposed, including performing 600 hours of community service, taking classes in human relations and multiculturalism and naming an alumni chapter adviser. - Associated Press
