Miller, who worked his way through college singing and then gave up that career for law and politics, unveiled the 60-second political ad Monday. It features a song he wrote and performs, "The Spirit of the Flag." Amid patriotic scenes of Miller crooning the tune, an announcer talks of Miller's service in the House of Delegates and his qualifications for governor.
The ad is unconventional on several fronts. While music video political ad campaigns have surfaced in the past decade, this is likely the first in which the candidate performs.
And Miller's decision to go on television two weeks before the convention left aides to his two rivals for the nomination scratching their heads. With all delegates already selected, pre-convention campaigns generally are waged in telephone and mail appeals directly to that group.
At the end of the spot, Miller offers a video of the tune - without the political material - for a $25 donation.
