FOOTBALL-NFL CHANGES INTENTIONAL GROUNDING RULE

The NFL has liberalized its grounding rule in an effort to get more consistent officiating and better protect quarterbacks.

The measure, passed at meetings in Atlanta, allows the quarterback, while out of the pocket and facing imminent loss of yardage, to throw a pass that lands near or beyond the line of scrimmage, even if no offensive player has a realistic chance to catch it. It includes throwing the ball over the sideline or endline.
