Leonard (6-1), a right-hander, walked two and struck out nine for the Cavaliers (15-3), who will play host to Gate City on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the first round of the Region IV Tournament.
Carroll County got its 12 hits off Demons senior Jason Basham, a right-hander who walked one and struck out five. Cavaliers catcher Kevin DeHaven went 2-for-2 with a double, the only extra-base hit of game; Ray Briggs was 2-for-4; and Tony Berrier was 3-for-3. Carroll County scored twice in the first inning, once in the second and twice in the fifth.
Byron Gates' fourth-inning single was the only hit for Christiansburg (7-12), which scored its run in the inning. The Demons also earned a berth in the Region IV Tournament; they will play at Tazewell on Tuesday.
\ SOCCER: At Blacksburg, Todd Lyons scored two goals and Chris Evans had four assists as unbeaten Blacksburg (15-0-2) bombed Christiansburg 7-0 in the championship game of the Region IV tournament. Both teams advanced to the state Group AA tournament on Tuesday. Blacksburg plays host to Region III runner-up Northside at 7 p.m., and Christiansburg (11-6-1) plays at Region III champion William Byrd.
\ At Daleville, senior forward Kevin Niday, celebrating his 18th birthday, scored the winning goal with 20 minutes left as William Byrd (16-2) defeated Northside 1-0 in the Region III Tournament championship game. The title is Byrd's fourth in a row and seventh in the eight years of the tournament. Northside is 9-8-2.
