Don't be a victim, warns Agricultural Extension Agent Joe Hunnings of the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service. Hunnings offers several ways to make sure you are hiring a professional arborist. The person you hire should:
Have a telephone listing. Although anyone can be listed in the Yellow Pages, a listing at least shows some degree of permanence.
Be part of an established business and working for the company, not moonlighting.
Be able to show proof of insurance for property damage, personal liability and workers compensation.
Be able to provide references from other individuals or companies. If possible, check with previous clients.
Ideally, be a member of a professional association or have professional certification.
Hunnings said never let yourself be rushed into an inadvisable choice by bargain prices, and never pay in advance.
