Students no longer will be able to smoke in their rooms, and professors may not puff a pipe in their offices under the rules that take effect Thursday.
"It's clear from the evidence that secondhand smoke is a carcinogen," said Richard Staneski, ODU's vice president for administration. "Therefore, it's incumbent upon us to protect the health of all the university's employees, students and other community members who use our facilities."
The state-supported college has not set penalties for anyone violating the ban.
"We're not going to be smoking cops. We're assuming people are going to be responsible," Staneski said.
The ban expands rules put in place in 1991. ODU outlawed student smoking in academic buildings that year.
