16 AWARDED MEDALS AT GOLDEN OLYMPICS

Of the 19 senior athletes from Montgomery County who competed in the Virginia Golden Olympics at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, 16 won medals. The event took place June 2-6.

\ Competing in the 55-59 women's age category:

Betty Gordon received gold medals in riflery and archery and a silver in softball.

Betty Hanbury won a gold medal in the 10-kilometer cycling event, silver medals in the 5-kilometer cycling and riflery events and a bronze in miniature golf.

\ Competing in the 60-64 women's age category:

Janice Hixon took a gold medal in checkers, silver medals in basketball, the 5-kilometer walk and the 1,500-meter run and bronzes in the 100-meter and 200-meter runs and shotput.

Glenna Earles won a silver medal in basketball and a bronze in croquet.

\ Competing in the 65-69 women's age category:

Carolyn Michaels received a silver medal in the 5-kilometer cycling event and a bronze in the 1,500-meter walk.

Margie Pugh took a gold medal in croquet.

Louise Akers won gold medals in the 5-kilometer, 1,500-meter and 800-meter runs, a silver in the 400-meter run and a bronze in the 200-meter run.

\ Competing in the 65-74 women's age category:

Hazel Rouse won a silver medal in croquet.

Irene Orndoff won a gold medal in horseshoes and silver medals in croquet and miniature golf.

\ Competing in the 75-79 women's age category:

Mable Wickham captured a gold medal in basketball.

Winnie Simmons won gold medals in croquet, bowling and basketball.

\ Competing in the 80-84 women's age category:

Janie Howell captured silver medals in horseshoes and softball and bronzes in the frisbee and bowling events.

Catherine McKenzie won gold in the 1,500-meter walk, basketball and softball events and a bronze for horseshoes.

\ Competing in the 60-69 men's age category:

Amiel Williams won a bronze medal in basketball.

Jack Akers took a silver in golf and a bronze in the 1,500-meter walk.

\ Competing in the 70-74 men's age category:

Frank Rouse captured silver medals in croquet nd basketball and a bronze in riflery.

McKenzie, Gordon, Hixon, Jack and Louise Akers, and Katherine Hanbury will compete in the national Golden Olympics in Baton Rouge, La.
