STATE AM QUALIFYING UNDER WAY

Jimmy Flippen Jr. of Danville and Tom Orr of Midlothian shot 5-under-par 65s on Wednesday to share a one-stroke lead after the first round of qualifying for the 80th Virginia State Golf Association Amateur tournament in Newport News.

"To be honest with you, I feel right at home," said Flippen, a 20-year-old University of Virginia student. His home Danville Golf Club course is much like the 6,406-yard James River Country Club course - tree-lined and tight.

Orr, 45, an insurance executive, said, "After I got over being nervous, about halfway through the back nine, I played very well."

Tom McKnight, 38, the three-time former champion from Galax, shot a 66 that left him third among the 11 players who broke par.

Trevor Sidley, a recent William and Mary graduate, shot 67 with six birdies and three bogeys to hold fourth place.

Seven-time former winner Vinny Giles of Richmond, who will be captain of this year's U.S. Walker Cup team against Great Britain, and Tazewell insurance executive Charlie Green were tied at 68.

Defending champion Allen Barber of Yorktown, who said he played well on his home course, was among five at 69.

Wayne Jackson, a two-time former champion playing his home course, matched par along with Buck Brittain of Tazewell and former State Junior champion Curtis Deal of Chesapeake.

Another two-time former winner and last year's runner-up, Keith Decker of Fieldale, had a 72. Former champions Hank Klein of Richmond and Ned Baber of Roanoke were at 75.

The low 32 qualifiers after another 18-hole qualifying round today will begin two rounds of match play Friday. There will be two more rounds Saturday with the 36-hole title match set for Sunday.

Based on Wednesday's scores in the hazy, muggy sunshine, it appeared the cut would be at 5 or 6 over par.

In other golf:

Heather Graff of Kennewick, Wash., shot a 76 on Wednesday to finish with a 228 total and a three-stroke victory over second-round leader Lee Shirley of Roanoke at the North & South Junior championship in Pinehurst, N.C. Shirley, who recently won the Roanoke Valley Golf Hall of Fame women's championship, had a third-round 80 and a 231 total.
